The Mission The Venerable Pope John Paul II(18 May 1920 - 2 April 2005) reigned as Pope of the Catholic Church and Sovereign of The Holy See from 16 October 1978 until his death. He played a very important role in teaching people about Christianity. He wrote 14 papal encyclicals and taught about "The Theology of the Body". John Paul also talked about the dignity of women and the importance of the family for the future of mankind. 2010/2011 Discover the World Anew: famous Poles 3
The Traveller John Paul IIwas a “big traveller”-during his pontificate, he made trips to 129 countries. He also traveled to countries that no pope had ever visited before, e.g. he was the first Pope who visited Mexico in January 1979- before his initial trip to Poland as a Pope.He was the first Pope, who traveled to the United Kingdom in 1982- where he met Queen Elizabeth II and the Supreme Governor of the Church of England. Pope John Paul II traveled a lot and met believers from many divergent faiths. He constantly tried to find common ground, both doctrinal and dogmatic. John Paul II played a very important role in bringing down communism in eastern Europe, very spectacular was his trip to Poland in 1979. 2010/2011 Discover the World Anew: famous Poles 4
The Pope for Youth • John Paul IIhad a special relationship with Catholic youth and is known by some as The Pope for Youth. He understood their problems, especially feeling of being in some way “lost in new times”. Before he was chosen to be a Pope, he used to camp and mountain hike with young people. He still went mountain hiking or skiing when he was the Pope. • In 1984, he established World Youth Daywith the intention of bringing young Catholics from all parts of the world together to celebrate the faith. 2010/2011 Discover the World Anew: famous Poles 5
The Saint He was a very charismatic person with a lot of ideas. He was also very interested in problems of people from all over the world. A lot of them had a feeling, that they had an opportunity to talk to a saint man. Since the death of John Paul II, a number of clergy at the Vatican and laymen throughout the world have been referring to the late pontiff as "John Paul the Great”. Several national and municipal public projects were named to honour the Pope, for example the Roma Termini station was dedicated to Pope John Paul II by a vote of the City Council, the first public object in Rome named a non Italian. 2010/2011 Discover the World Anew: famous Poles 6
