  2. Basic Information: • Mrs. Cos for short • Students are on “blocked” English schedule, meaning approximately 2 hours of class • Combination reading and writing • New Common Core curriculum

  3. Elements of Common Core Reading Text complexity and the Growth of Comprehension • Close Reading • Text-dependent questions • Novels this year: The Outsiders and The Hunger Games • 75% Non-fiction

  4. Elements of Common Core Writing Text Types, Responding to Reading, and Research • On-Demand Writing • Research Essays

  5. Elements of Common Core Speaking and Listening Flexible Communication and Collaboration • Presentations of essays • Group work

  6. Elements of Common Core Language Conventions, Effective Use, and Vocabulary • Increased Vocabulary • Use of context clues

  7. Accelerated Reader • Students must read at least one (1) non-fiction AND one (1) fiction book. • Books MUST BE a 4.0 book level or above AND within your child’s reading range. • Students must earn 14 AR points or more per each 9-weeks period.. • 1st 9-weeks deadline: October 6.

  8. Policies and Procedures • Binder • Bathroom • Homework • Make-up work • Eating, drinking, or gum chewing • Macbook (testing and daily grades)

  9. Parents should… • check grades online. I should have them updated by Tuesday of each week. • send an e-mail if you have a question. My address is bcospelich@clintonpublicschools.comor go to the school’s website. • ask your student about his AR progress toward the AR due date each nine weeks. • ask to see his binder/graded tests/quizzes each week to check for organization, etc.

  10. Supplies for English EVERYDAY • 3 tabs in a binder (can be shared with another class) • 1 single subject notebook • Colored pencils • Highlighters (various colors) • Glue sticks
