NCI Approach:Alliance for Nanotechnology in Cancer Medical applications of nanotechnology require multi-disciplinary approach involving both technology developers and technology users in the process of innovation and product development A comprehensive, systematized initiative encompassing the public and private sectors and designed to accelerate the use of the best capabilities of nanotechnology to cancer applications was launched by NCI in 2005 • Centers of Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence (CCNEs) • Cancer Nanotechnology Platform Partnerships (CNPPs) • Training programs • Nanotechnology Characterization Laboratory (NCL)

Major Accomplishments • Scientific standing – 475 journal papers published with average impact factor > 8. • Clinical translation – over 30 companies formed and associated with the program in the space of diagnostics and therapy. Developing strong intellectual property portfolio - 133 disclosures and patents filed. • Leveraged funding: • over $80 M of new, peer-reviewed government research funds (accumulative amount for period of next five years) • over $150 M of funds from philanthropic sources to establish infrastructure and perform research
