DARK, DIM and DARINGWendt Library's Space Reduction Project Anne Glorioso Jody Hoesly June 27, 2011
In the spring of 2010, Wendt Commons embarked on a project to repurpose our 4th floor from book stacks and study space into a Teaching and Learning Center. To create this flexible and technology-enhanced “learning emporium,” the 4th floor collection, consisting of almost 90,000 volumes, needed to be removed along with the stacks. Other space in the library was not available, the shelving facilities were full, and the timetable was 1 year.

Criteria Considered • Duplication • Online Access • Licensing • Usage • Condition • Historical Value • Room for Growth • Costs • Timeline

Dim vs. Dark • What is Wendt DARK storage? Materials sent to Dark storage are items that we would have withdrawn because we own the electronic copy or backfile and have a good license for perpetual access and document delivery. The only publishers who met these criteria were Elsevier and Wiley. • What is Wendt DIM storage? Materials sent to Dim storage are items that we would have put into a shelving facility if it were available. For items with electronic access, the license may not provide perpetual access OR document delivery. For print-only materials, only campus unique items that met our weeding criteria were sent.
