Mattioli 4, 53100 Siena (SI), Italy The variable landscape of Tuscany investigated (almost 23,000 km2) goes from the Thyrrenian coast - including both sandy and rocky areas and islands - through alluvial plains and a large hills zone covering more than 50% out of the total territory to the mountainous area of the Apennines. From the data reported by the District office about 40% of Tuscany is wooded and 35% under cultivation. The whole Region is subdivided in squares of nearly 9 km2.
