General Rules of Quotations • Keep them surrounded: • Quotes should always have quotations marks. • Keep them cited: • Quotes should always be followed by the author’s nameand page/paragraph or line number in brackets.
The Quote Sandwich • Your quotes need to be linked to your thoughts. • You can’t just ‘drop’ a quote into your writing; you have to neatly incorporate your quotes into your sentences. • Think of this as a making a ‘Quote Sandwich’.

Open-Faced Quote Sandwich • Sometimes, a quote can come at the end of a sentence. • I like to think of these situations as ‘Open-Faced Quote Sandwiches.’
Examples • Thedarkmood of thestoryiscapturedbythesettingwhichisdescribed as “a gloomy, wet, and stormynight” (Paul 4). • A satisfyingendingisprovidedforthereader as thecharacters“ride off happilyintothesunset” (Smith 9).
