A unique international UPS standard Defined by the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), and also adopted by the CENELEC (European Standard Committee). IEC 62040 ( ENV 50091) is a unique standard dedicated to UPS, applicable worldwide • IEC 62040-1 (ENV 50091-1) refers to safety • IEC 62040-2 (ENV 50091-2) refers to EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility • IEC 62040-3 (ENV 50091-3) refers to performances, test and topologies
UPS standard: IEC 62040 - 2EMC Requirements • Date of publication: 1999 • This standard is based on the CENELEC standard EN 50091-2 • used in Europe for the compliance to the EMC Directive • and CE mark • This standard covers all EMC aspects for small and large UPS: • emission • immunity • test methods
UPS standard: IEC 62040 - 2 (cont)EMC Requirements • Field of application • single UPS units or UPS systems from some VA to MVA, • this standard takes precedence over all aspects of Generic Standards, • the requirements selected so as to ensure an adequate level of EMC compatibility for UPS at public, commercial and industrial locations, • this standard refers also to others IEC EMC standards, particularly for immunity tests. • UPS classified in two categories for emission • UPS for unrestricted sales distribution • UPS for restricted sales distribution: users with appropriate technical competence • Revision of this standard in 2002 and a new version expected for end 2003

UPS standard: IEC 62040 - 3Classifications 1) Passive standby or Off line When normal. Output voltage and frequency depend on utility. Direct connect from utility to load. Battery is charged. When backup. Output voltage and frequency as in spec when back up only. 2) Line interactive When normal. Output frequency depend on utility. Voltage is adjusted Direct connect from utility to load. Battery is charged. When backup. Output frequency and voltage as in spec when back up only. 3) Double conversion (on line) When normal. Output frequency and voltage are regulated all the time Due to AC-DC-AC conversion. Battery is charged. When backup. As specification and normal operation.
