Objectives/Methods • To show elevation-sensitive distribution of snow throughout Vermont • Created 5 different maps • Seasonal Precipitation • Seasonal Snowfall • 3 Different Cases
Data Sources • Vermont County Boundaries from VCGI • Total Winter Precipitation from VCGI • Elevation Maps from VCGI • Individual Storm Amounts from NWS BTV
Vermont County Boundaries Downloaded the Vermont County Boundaries Shapefile from VCGI. Used in each of the 5 different final maps.
Elevation Contours Downloaded the Elevation Contours for every 100 feet from VCGI.
Separating the Contours Using the Logic Test I separated out the contours to 1000 feet, 2000 feet, 3000 feet, and 4000 feet to make everything more readable.
Map #1- Winter Precipitation Added on the downloaded Winter Precipitation Shapefile from VCGI.
Map #1- Winter Precipitation Used Zonal Statistics to calculate the Mean for each elevation contour.
Creating Own Shapefile • Took the Individual or Seasonal Snowfall Amounts from the NWS and Imported into Excel • Created a New Personal Geodatabase • Import a Single Table • Chose my Excel Spreadsheet
Creating Own Shapefile • Created a Feature Class From the XY Table • Changed the Coordinate System to Geographic WGS 1984 • Created the Shapefile • Added into my Display
Individual Points Changed the color scale and break points in the data.
Interpolating Used Spline or IDW (Inverse Distance Weighted) to Interpolate the data. Changed the Color Scale and Data Break Points to make more user-friendly. Used Zonal Statistics to find mean snowfall at a certain elevation.

Conclusion • Using GIS and user-created shapefiles, distribution of snowfall can be shown • Elevation-Sensitivity can be shown • Unique elements of storms can be shown • ie: blocked NW flow
