Institute Goals • To give you the knowledge and analytical tools to: • understand how space/geography play a role in your research and discipline • incorporate spatial questions into your research • Feel comfortable (or at least moderately at ease) using spatial analysis tools to answer your research questions, where appropriate Winter 2011 GIS Institute
What Does this Really Mean? • Understanding the characteristics of spatial data and what makes these data special • Making maps • Reference maps, exploratory analysis, etc. • Creating spatial indices or variables • Distance, accessibility, etc. • Spatial analysis • Point pattern analysis, least-cost path analysis, spatial statistics, etc. Winter 2011 GIS Institute
How We’ll Accomplish our Goals • Lectures, starting in about half an hour • Hands-on tutorials and practice working with ArcGIS • Presentations by students and faculty • Individual projects and final presentations Winter 2011 GIS Institute
Importance of Space & Geography • Space can be thought of as the organization of objects in space • Are points (people, gas stations, or farmhouses) uniformly distributed across space or do we identify patterns? • Can we identify empirical regularities regarding flows of information, people, or things across various distances? • This is where a lot of geographical theory comes in… • Geography – or place – has to do with the characteristics of a specific location and those characteristics are related to a particular phenomenon • Often, we’re interested in both – everything takes place somewhere Winter 2011 GIS Institute
Institute Capstone: Presentations • The first week of the Institute will be spent mainly on learning • The second week is spent on individual project work, applying what you’ve learned • Last day of Institute Mini Conference • Abstracts due to me via email by this Friday COB • 10 minute presentations • Invite your friends!
