Who are our users? Also, we had concern b/c MAVIS is a complicated system, its features may thrill archivists, but will our users be lost? In addition our collection is unique in that is contains very few titles and consists mostly of production material. Would they understand what they found? Users include filmmakers, producers, scholars, and students. However, we make an effort to have archival materials incorporated into coursework so we felt that undergraduates were our primary user. Unclear how to request and access material Our users probably don’t understand special collections. Even the concept of retrieving a book off of a shelf is becoming outdated. They want it online and they want it now. Undergraduate may be too timid to just call unless they feel that we are waiting for them. Our users probably don’t understand special collections. Slide 36:Lessons learned

Stay positive Remain open to change 1. We will never be “done” with our online catalog. Technology will change, our users will change, how they access information will change. Although it’s not usually how it works…It’s our responsibility to be to not only be aware of those changes, but foresee them and adapt to them. Otherwise our resources will not be utilized. 1. Slide 37:Lessons learned

Stay positive Remain open to change Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good We could have spend years perfecting things…different users are going to have different expectations, experience, and knowledge. Yes, we ideallywant to foresee our user needs, but there is no shame in letting them tell us what they want through usability. The bigger picture—Don’t get caught up in the little things that ultimately make no difference to the user. Providing access to our collections is a large part of our mission. Therefore, it was more important for us to put ourselves out there in some way. They want to find things. we want them to find our things. Mavisweb provides an virtual open door to our collections. 3. The bigger picture—Don’t get caught up in the little things that ultimately make no difference to the user.
