  1. Proposal for a dedicated LHCb Linux / PC batch facility at CERN Catherine Charbonnier Tony Cass CERN - IT/PDP LHCb Software Week

  2. Why a Linux / PC facility? • LHCb use AIX services • Current problems • lack of C++ compiler that • supports the latest language constructs AND • is compatible with CLHEP as provided by IT/ASD • lack of support for AIX • GNU products • ROOT LHCb Software Week

  3. Why a Linux / PC facility? • Growth of PC systems • at CERN • everywhere! • O.S. is Windows NT or Linux • Linux could match very easily with LHCb requirements • Set up a dedicated PC cluster running Linux LHCb Software Week

  4. Now Will be The proposed platform Lhcb rsplus rsbatch Lhcb lxtest shiftlhcb LHCb Software Week

  5. Details of the implementation • Hardware (see Fig.) • lxtest cluster = 3 Dual Pentium II PCs • shiftlhcb cluster = 4 Dual Pentium II PCs, 450MHz per processor 800 CU = Twice the rsbatch allocation to LHCb (2,000,000CUh/year  4/32 nodes) • Fast-Ethernet connections LHCb Software Week

  6. Details of the implementation • Software • CERN certified version of Linux • RedHat 5.1 (will be upgraded to RedHat 6.0) • Kernel 2.2.6 (best kernel for SMP systems) • LSF batch system • AFS / SUE environment • environment identical to rsbatch • g77/gcc instead of xlf/xlc LHCb Software Week

  7. 3COM 3900 switch 2x10GB UATA 2x2GB UATA 2x10GB UATA 2x10GB UATA 2x10GB UATA 2x10GB UATA 2x10GB UATA 2xPII@ 450MHz,128MB HP Kayak XAs 2xPII@ 450MHz, 128MB 2xPII@ 450MHz, 128MB 2xPII@ 450MHz, 128MB 2xPII@ 450MHz, 128MB 2xPII@ 450MHz, 128MB 2xPII@ 300MHz, 256MB lxtest shiftlhcb Lhcb 475GB SCSI Site Ethernet network CORE Ethernet network shift18 3COM 3900 switch

  8. Future • lxtest cluster is available: • iss name lxtest • telnet • xdm • shiftlhcb cluster: • PCs ordered • should be available by end of July 1999. • Further expansion will be discussed during COCOTIME round. LHCb Software Week

  9. FOR MORE INFO... • Please contact • IT/LHCb linkman tony.cass@cern.ch • Service Manager for shiftlhcb cluster catherine.charbonnier@cern.ch • Service Manager for lxtest cluster pietro.martucci@cern.ch LHCb Software Week
