Background Information… • Vladimir I. Lenin heard of a revolution to get Czar Nicholas II out of power..traveled through Germany to Russia

Strains of War: WWI • 1914: Russia joins allies in WWI (Britain and France) Fighting against Germany and Austria-Hungary
Strains of WWI continued.. • Industry- underdeveloped • Transportation System- WEAK • Enormous casualties in war • SO WHO WAS TO BLAME?
March Revolution 1917 • People unhappy with war and food shortage “Bread and Peace” • Peasants overthrew czar’s officials and seized some land. • Czar Nicholas II Abdicated, or gave up the throne. (within 1 week) • Set up provisional government to introduce reforms
Continued • Socialists set up organizations in protest of provisional government. They formed… • Soviets- a council made up of workers, soldiers, and peasants.
Bolshevik Revolution • A.K.A. Socialist Revolution • Socialism- A system in which the government owns and operates major businesses and controls other parts of the economy. • Bolshevik party organized soviets
Bolshevik Revolution continued • Leader-Lenin “Land, Peace, Bread” became his motto • Provisional government wanted Lenin arrested. • Lenin captured government buildings and arrested members of provisional government
Lenin decided 2 things #1 Peasants could keep land they seized after March Revolution #2 Seek immediate peace with Germany
End of WWI for Russia • March 1918 Russia and Germany signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
Lenin • Marxist ideas- wanted a working class to rise up in a revolution. • Set out to create a Bolshevik dictatorship • Plot- destroy all political parties in Russia.
Civil War: 1919 to 1921 • Problem- What kind of rule should we have? • Communists (Bolsheviks) were most organized against many split regimes • Leon Trotsky- set up and trained Communist army or the Red Army • Opposition=White Army, not very effective • So what happened?
Result… • Communists won control of Russian Empire-- Renamed Union of Soviet Socialists Republics or USSR. USSR = Soviet Union
New Economic Policy NEP • Created by Lenin • Stopped taking grain from peasants- allowed them to sell it. • Government controlled heavy industry but allowed some private businesses to operate. • 1924- Lenin dies; Joseph Stalin takes over…Ultimate Goal = Total Communism
