    3. 1. How did the Justice Dept. under A. Mitchell Palmer respond to this fear? Palmer Raids Hired J. Edgar Hoover to lead the “Anti-radical” division Targeted Communists, Socialists & Anarchists

    4. 2. Why did Palmer eventually lose his standing w/ the American Public? May 1, 1920 – supposed plot for Communist over-throw did not happen Raids found no evidence of plan

    5. 3. How did the Ku Klux Klan respond to this fear? Strengthened Membership Racial violence Influenced National, State & Local politics

    6. 4. Why did the Klan eventually lose popularity & membership? Crimes committed by leaders

    7. Public opinion turned against labor unions as many Americans came to believe that unions encouraged Communism.

    8. 5. Why was the strike by Boston police unpopular with the public? Threatened public safety Appeared to be an act of Communist or Anarchist rebellion

    9. 6. Why did Massachusetts Gov. Calvin Coolidge become so popular? Called Nat’l Guard to restore order Led to the end of the strike

    10. 7. Why was the strike at US Steel unpopular? AFL leader was linked to Communism Violence scared the public

    11. 8. How did Pres. Wilson respond to the steel strike? Wrote a plea for peace Called an Arbitrator
