Ways to Identify Sedimentary Rocks One way you can classify is if there is a fossil in the rock. The reason why is because sedimentary rocks are in layers and the pressure leaves the impression. Another way is that the color will most likely be a dull and earthy color because it is made from within the earth. If the rock has been made from sediments that have been pressed down on, formed of organic items like sea shells or animal remains. If you can see pieces of other rocks all in one rock then you will know it’s a sedimentary rock.
Ways to Identify a Metamorphic Rock If you see bands of color then you will recognize that it is a metamorphic rock. In a metamorphic rock you can normally see the layers. That can give a metamorphic rock away. If you can see flat crystals that can give away that it is a metamorphic rock. If the rock has been formed from another rock but with more heat and pressure and has been formed at the surface then it will be metamorphic.
Way to Identify Igneous Rocks If the rock has formed from magma or lava then you will know that it is an igneous rock. If the rock has crystals that are not flatted then most likely it will be an igneous rock. If there is a glassy look to it or air pockets then the rock will be an igneous. The reason why is that they were made outside and they dry quickly. You get those air sockets from a rock shooting up in the air. An igneous rock may have no crystals at all because of not drying quickly so you can not always tell from the crystals, but a lot of times you can.
