  2. Word Wall – Create as a Class As a class we need to decide on ten vocabulary words that you think are important to the course. We need to write the word and a definition (in your own words!) on a paper and stick it on the wall.

  3. Learning Goals 9. I will be able to explain and evaluate the collective bargaining process. 10. I will be able to define organized labour, and explain the different types of organized labour.

  4. Vocabulary – Take 5 minutes and find the definitions • Collective Bargaining • Mediation • Arbitration • Strike • Lockout • Legally Binding • Union • Labour

  5. What is Collective Bargaining • A negotiating process between a union (workers) and a company (management) • The purpose of unions is to seek fair treatment of workers through “strength in numbers” • The goal is a fair contract that is negotiated between the two parties.

  6. Articles of Collective Bargaining • Salary/Wages • Working Conditions • Benefits • Hours/Vacation Time • Seniority/Job Protection • Pensions

  7. What happens when a contract can’t be negotiated? • Mediation – suggestion is non-binding • Arbitration – suggestion is legally binding • Job Action – Strike or Lockout.

  8. Organized Labour • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubIWyT7nGdU • Organized Labour - An association of workers united as a singleentity for the purpose of improving the workers' economic status and working conditions through collective bargaining with employers

  9. Types of Organized Labour • Unions - often industry-specific and tend to be more common in manufacturing, mining, construction, transportation and the public sector. E.g. Canadian Auto Workers, ETFO (elementary teachers federation of Ontario) • Professional Associations – represent people in learned occupation (occupations that need higher education). Purpose is to maintain the high standards of that profession. E.g. teachers, accountants, lawyers • Workers Cooperatives - the shares in the company are held by the workers. Each worker has a vote in major company decisions/operations.
