What Was On The Test? • Reading • Language – Grades 2 and higher • Spelling – Grades 2, 3, 5 only • Word Analysis – Grades 1, 2, 3 only • Mathematics • Science • Social Studies
What do the scores mean? • Students have a percentile score in each test area. • Grades and Schools have a median percentile score in each test area
What is a Percentile? • A percentile score tells you how well your child did on the test compared to other students who took the same test • A percentile is not the same as a percentage
Understanding Percentiles • A Percentage score: Joe takes a math test and gets half the questions right. His grade is 50 percent – not so good. • A Percentile score: Joe takes a math test and does better than half the class. His score is at the 50th percentile – right in the middle of the class.
Understanding Percentiles • Percentilescores are related to the group used for comparison. • National Percentiles compare how your child did on the test with other students in the same grade across the country. • Scores between 25th and 75th percentile are considered in the average range.
Your Child’s Score Report The Home Report gives you important information about your child’s scores, and tells you how well he/she has mastered basic academic skills.
The scale on the left side of the graph shows the National Percentile scores (1 to 99). The 50th percentile is the national average.
The shaded bars show your child’s score for each subject area. The height of each bar shows the National Percentile score for each area – the number above the bar is the actual score.
Score ranges showing average, below-average, and above-average achievement levels are shown on the right side of the graph. The gray shaded area – percentiles 25 through 75 – indicates the average range.
The Observations section gives you more information about the score report and your child’s performance on the test.
The back of the Home Report gives you more detailed information about your child’s performance in each subject area. This information includes a description of the kinds of skills tested, and describes how well your child has mastered those skills.
Our School Score Profiles • To look at how our students performed overall, we use a Median Percentile Score in each test area • The Median Score is the Middle Score – if all scores for a group were arranged in order from lowest to highest, the median is the score at the center of the list – half the scores are higher than the median, and half are lower than the median.

Our Progress Report • Comparing our scores for two years gives us information about how our students are growing academically • To compare performance from one year to the next, we use Normal Curve Equivalent scores – NCE’s. • NCE’s are like percentiles – the average is 50, and the highest possible score is 99. An NCE of 50 shows that the performance is right on grade level for that student or class.
Our School Score Profiles • Our profiles compare how our students performed this year and last year. • In some cases, students did not take parts of the test both years. • The grade level shown is the class grade for this year.

Performance Levels • Performance levels are a way of evaluating how well students are progressing towards mastering the material they need for continued academic success. • Standards for performance levels are based on what abilities are expected of a student by the time they complete a specific grade level.
Performance Levels • There are five performance levels. • Students who are at levels 4 or 5 are considered to have achieved mastery of the subject. • The standards are set based on students who are completing Grade 5 and Grade 8. • Students in lower grades are judged by the same standard: • students in Grades 3 and 4 are judged by the same standards as the Grade 5 student • students in Grades 6 and 7 are judged by the Grade 8 standards.
