  1. Examining Wages of Completers vs. LeaversRyan FullerAlice van Ommeren

California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office Research, Analysis and Accountability
  2. Background Salary Surfer was released in 2013, median wages for completers by discipline. Shows increasing wages for almost all completers, comparing before and after. What are the wages of students that don’t complete? – Leavers Conceptually (or traditionally) leavers are identified as students that dropped out.
  3. Study Framework Type of Study Exploratory study to understand ‘completers’ wages in context to a comparison group. Research Questions How do wages after graduation differ between ‘completers’ and ‘leavers’? How are these differences affected by demographics, regional and other factors such as student goal & reported education?
  4. Research Question How do wages after graduation differ between ‘completers’ and ‘leavers’? How are these differences affected by demographics, regional and other factors such as student goal & reported education?
  5. Criteria for ‘Completers’ Salary Surfer tool developed by Chancellor’s Office in 2013. Methodology for ‘completers’, those earning some award All students who earned an award in a given year and were no longer enrolled anywhere in the CC system the following year and did not subsequently transfer to a 4 year institution Awards in academic years 2002-03 to 2006-07 Wages in all years (2 years before to 5 years after)
  6. Criteria for ‘Leavers’ Those who left the system between 2002-03 and 2006-07 Did not enroll anywhere in the CC system the following academic year, did not earn an award at time of exit and did not subsequently transfer. Wages in all years (2 years before to 5 years after)
  7. Differences between Groups Difficult to compare medians of two groups because of varying distribution of key variables that correlate with wages, in this case reported education. Difference in N’s (leavers=268,907 vs. completers=34,386)
  8. % Totals Ethnicity, Gender, Age
  9. % Totals, Reported Education
  10. % Totals, Reported Goal
  11. Overall Completer vs. Leaver Median wages after 5 years
  12. Statistical Matching Idea is to create a subset of the much larger ‘leavers’ group matched on observable characteristics to the smaller ‘completers’ group. Reduce Bias of variables. (Rubin 1973;Wacholder et al. 1981) End up with ‘leaver’ & ‘completer’ tables roughly equal in size and similar distributions a key variable. We used reported education (BA/BS yes or no).

  23. Career Skills Building Students Students that take a course or set of courses to expand their career or occupational skillset. Not generally captured & reported as a ‘traditional’ outcome “The skills-builder group, which includes almost a third of all first-time students, took one or two courses a year over a couple of years with very high course success rates, but very low attainment of a degree, certificate or transfer.” (Bahr & Booth 2012)
  24. Completers vs. Leavers median wages 1-10 Units earned by Age
  25. Completers vs. Leavers median wages 1-10 Units earned by Age 35-44
  26. Completers vs. Leavers median wages For those with 1-10 units earned, leavers over 25 years old had higher wages than completers (likely influence of career skills building group)

  30. Completers vs. Leavers median wages by Reported Goal Leavers with goal of ‘Update Job Skills’ or ‘Personal Development’ higher earnings than completers. Completers higher than leavers wages for transfer or degree oriented goals. Highest earning Leavers had goal of ‘Update Job Skills’ & Completers ‘Maintain License Cert’

  41. What we learned On the whole completion of an award yielded higher median wages than those who left without one 5 years after departure from the community college system. By demographics exception of Asian, White, Pacific Islander & American Indian Males, students aged over 35 and students over 25 earning 1-10 units. Variation among disciplines.
  42. What we learned Older students and those who earned < 10 units higher earnings Examine earnings within discipline (Admin. of Justice, Electronics etc.) Statewide wage trends, likely variation at the regional, college and program levels, differences in local labor markets
  43. Future Research Break out by industry code, are leavers working in different industries than completers? Is industry for leavers related to coursework area? Identifying and separating out distinct types of leavers. How did their earnings fare over time?
