The network ERNA European Red Cross/Red Crescent Network on HIV and AIDS and TB On 1998, in Villa Maraini, Rome, the Italian Red Cross, together with other 12 Red Cross/Red Crescent National Societies promoted the birth of the Network of the Federation ERNA Up to now 40 European National Societies have joined ERNA

4. The Mission of the Network ERNA “to help strengthen National Societies' operational capacity to combat the spreading of HIV/AIDS and TB amongst the most vulnerable people”

5. Objectives To promote the setting up of innovative initiatives and to reproduce them in other NSs by adapting them to the beneficiaries. To promote and facilitate concerted collaborative actions in the prevention of HIV/AIDS, TB and other communicable diseases with other international and national organizations and with existing Federation's Networks To involve PLWHA and other target groups in work at all level

The Next ERNA Annual Meeting It will be on “de-stigmatization” As Bernard Gardiner said during his presentation at Mexico AIDS Conference: “People are fed up with the ‘Stigma and Discrimination mantra’ and nothing happening. We have to explore new effective ways to confront stigma, focused not on the rational but on the emotional”

9. YEAR 2003The 7th ERNA Annual Meeting in Jurmala During the 7th Meeting ERNA has included Harm Reduction in its “Terms of Reference”. ERNA recommends HR as a good practice well suited to the RC fundamental principles.

YEAR 2004“To build up harm reduction capacities in Eastern Europe and Central Asia” Since the year 2004 the Red Cross centre provides training courses on harm reduction and drug abuse treatment for representatives from National Societies. The aim of the one week interactive course is to help delegates understand the realities of working in harm reduction and the practicalities of establishing a programme.

12. It started with ERNA members and since 2007 the centre has expanded its training to work with National Societies in Asia, South America and Africa.

The programme advocate for a humanitarian approach to the drug problem “Delegates get to meet with users so they can see with their own eyes that these are real people - all individuals - who can change their lives if they are supported in a humanitarian way.” “We work as catalyst, how it brings about changes depends on the person and the relation we do have with”

Peer education and active involvement of drug users and the community The promoted approach is also based on peer education and active involvement of drug users and other organizations already working in the field as an effective, proven method for reaching people who use drugs in their own environment.

16. YEAR 2005: The “Rome Consensus”  In December 2005, ERNA was among the first signatories of the“Rome Consensus”
