Access Services • Not what we are here to discuss • Access Services in SharePoint 2013 • MS Access is used as a tool to create and maintain a SQL Server database • SharePoint is used as the front-end • Forms/pages are created in MS Access • Access Services in SharePoint 2010 • MS Access is used as a tool to created and maintain SharePoint list data • Forms/pages are created in MS Access
SharePoint Functionality • Built-in Import/Export SharePoint functionality is limited • Import/Export spreadsheet • Copy/Paste • How do you do bulk updates of list data? • SharePoint Reporting capabilities are limited • SQL Server Reporting Services is great, but it may not be available to you
Why MS Access? • Access can connect to a wide variety of data sources, including SharePoint • Linked tables • Import into Access • You can run SQL statements against imported or linked tables • Access has special features that allow for the creation of SharePoint lists • Access has a robust reporting tool that can be used to generate reports against SharePoint data • Access reports can be saved as pdf files and stored in a SharePoint library • You probably already own MS Access • Why pay for a third party tool?
What Can do with Access? • Export Data into a new SharePoint list • Append data to an existing SharePoint list • Bulk updates of SharePoint list data • Copy data from one SharePoint site or list to another • Create a new list from 2 or more tables or lists • Export SharePoint list data to a database • Combine numerous SharePoint lists • Create “real” reports based on SharePoint list data • Create reports based on SharePoint list data combined with data from other sources
Getting Data Into Access • Import Data • Link to data • Be careful!
