How do we do that? What organizations should we build connections with?

  19. Spring League • Single gender leagues start 2012 • Increase in registrant numbers • Women’s coached league • Intermediate and Advanced player offerings

  20. These are VERY raw numbers and have not been corrected

  21. Spring League: Data Needed • Survey Coached league participants • Flexibility or team cohesion?

  22. Sunday Night Women’s League

  23. Existing policies and procedures Did you know we had some?

  24. MUFA Rules

  25. MUFA Rules • Current: 11th edition rules of USA Ultimate • Future: 2020 Edition of USA Ultimate Rules • EXCEPT: FOULS (aligns with current WFDF) • Imbedded policies: • Ringer Rule and roster limits • Summer league “official sub” policy • Complaints policy

  26. Ringer Rule • Ringer" is defined as a person who is under 35 as of January 1 of the current year and have played at college or club nationals, or have a professional roster • You are a ringer if you are currently on a professional roster.

  27. FOULS / CONTACT • 5.1. Player control - it is the responsibility of every player to play under control. If a player cannot make a play without causing contact, EVEN IF THE PLAYER HITS THE DISC FIRST, then the play is not allowed and is considered a foul. A player can be removed from a game or the league for dangerous play. Contact does not need to be made for an action to be considered dangerous. Note that this is a MUFA-specific rule, and differs from USAU. • 5.2. Fouls – a foul does not need to be intentional to be a foul.

  28. Clarifications for 2020 • What leagues count as “professional?” • AUDL / MLU • PUL? • Does it start before or after college season? • Youth superstars on national teams?

  29. Transgender Policy MUFA is an inclusive community. Players play as corresponds to their gender identity. In terms of rules, usual MUFA rules about gender would apply based on the individual’s gender identity

  30. Summer League and Equity Why did we change the gender ratio? Where are all the non-male players?

  31. Summer league registration by the numbers…# of teams

  32. Summer league registration by the numbers…# Players

  33. Where did this gender ratio thing come from? • MUFA didn’t make it up (it’s from WFDF!) The options: • Status quo: “Offense decides” • Team who starts on offense decides 4:3 or 3:4 • WFDF Ratio B (“Gend-zone decides”) • Gender ratio decision alternates • Team in a specific endzone decides 4:3 or 3:4 • WFDF Ratio A (“every two points”) • Gender ratio automatically alternates after every two points

  34. Why did we change to Rule A? • Produces equal* play time for men and women • More play time for women = more likely to touch the disc • Speeds up game (don’t have to wait to signal) • Used in leagues in Australia and Canada • Rewards play that includes ALL players on the field • Teams can no longer “guilt” a team into playing 4:3 if they don’t have enough women • Teams don’t have to be losing to play with 4 women

  35. Summer participation • Registration trends roughly mirror between genders • Membership trends: • Membership for adults (ages 28+) is growing • Membership for teenagers (18 and under) is VERY SMALL • Ages 18-27 = most volatile and steadily decreasing enrollment since 2014

  36. Where are all the women? We are actually retaining more women now…

  37. We need to re-frame the discussion

  38. We need some help collecting data. This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA

  39. Some questions I ponder… • College-aged non-male participation: how do we grow our numbers? • How do we improve the experience of existing players? • Is it better to recruit new womxn or to reach out to the ones we didn’t retain?

  40. Outreach for 2020 • Captain quiz • Rules awareness for registration • Returning player discounts? • Captain development resources • Attendance spreadsheet templates • Soft skills development • Equity / Inclusion committee
