Helping Your Child At Home With Vocabulary Building
“Language Models" • Parents are the first language models for children! • The way the children speak, or the language that they use, is based on what is heard from their parents.
Environment • Parents must create an atmosphere that will help improve what a child hears.
Think about it! • Think about the words and how you use them. • Children who repeatedly hear, “I seen it,” will copy that language. • This means, chances are, if they speak this way, then they will write this way.
What can youdo about it? • Turn off the T.V. • Put a limit on how much video games are played and what television shows are watched. • If at all possible, setup closed captioning on every T.V. in the house so that your child will be forced to read ( or even visualize the picture with the words on the screen).
What do youdo about it? • Encourage family discussions. • For example, try scheduling time at the dinner table to talk about your day.
What can you do about it? • Also, try asking your child for help in preparing the meal. • Then talk about your day. • Like a “hear and tell” time.

Strategies for spelling or new vocabulary • If your child has started formal spelling at school: • Post the list on the refrigerator door. • Use those words with your child as discussions arise. • Encourage him/her to use them in THEIR responses. cat brisk ruler audacity morale
Strategies for spelling or new vocabulary If you have a cassette recorder, make a tape of words. • Say the word, • Define it, • Then, use it in a sentence. • Select words that he will find interesting • Have the child do the taping. • Encourage regular use of the tape. • If he or she is studying for a spelling test, they can also spell it on the tape. Seasoned = experienced
Other Strategies • Encourage the use of a "log" or "diary. " And Pen Pal Clubs are easy to find and join.
What have we learned? • Children listen, • Then use words, • Then read them, • And finally, write them. • What they team at home about words supports success in school !
Why review at home with your child? • A great deal of the learning that takes place at home is effective because it isn't a repeat of school. • Once learning at home becomes too formal and too "school-like," it looses its appeal. Make it happen everyday, with everything!
