Pt. 7 Beware Of The ‘Margaritaville’ Gospel
Psalm 80Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock! You who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth. Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, stir up your might and come to save us! Consider and answer me, O LORD my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death, Restore us, O God; let your face shine, that we may be saved!
LORD God of hosts, how long will you be angry with your people's prayers? You have fed them with the bread of tears and given them tears to drink in full measure. You make us an object of contention for our neighbors, and our enemies laugh among themselves. Restore us, O God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved! You brought a vine out of Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it. You cleared the ground for it; it took deep root and filled the land.
The mountains were covered with its shade, the mighty cedars with its branches. It sent out its branches to the sea and its shoots to the River. Why then have you broken down its walls, so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit? The boar from the forest ravages it, and all that move in the field feed on it. Turn again, O God of hosts! Look down from heaven, and see; have regard for this vine, Restore us, O LORD God of hosts! Let your face shine, that we may be saved!
Asaph knows: God Is All-Powerful Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock! You who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth. Asaph’s desire: Show your power, God stir up your might and come to save us! …O LORD my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death, Restore us, O God; let your face shine, that we may be saved!
Asaph’s despair: God does not seem inclined to alleviate his misery LORD God of hosts, how long will you be angry with your people's prayers? You have fed them with the bread of tears and given them tears to drink in full measure. You make us an object of contention for our neighbors, and our enemies laugh among themselves.
You brought a vine out of Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it. You cleared the ground for it; it took deep root and filled the land. Why then have you broken down its walls, so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit? The boar from the forest ravages it, and all that move in the field feed on it.
Suffering is not an elective, it is a core course in the University of Life. - Steven Lawson
Never, ever, ever go to the Lord and say, 'If it be thy will’. . . No Christian should ever be sick. - Benny Hinn, TBN
Well, you need to hear about money, because you ain't gonna have no love and joy and peace until you get some money! We established last night that you are not whole until you get your money. Amen. - Creflo Dollar, sermon 19 9 9
Classical theology defines sin as `rebellion against God.' The answer is not incorrect as much as it is shallow and insulting to the human being. Every person deserves to be treated with dignity even if he or she is a `rebellious sinner' . . . To be born again means that we must be changed from a negative to a positive self-image--from inferiority to self-esteem. - Robert Schuller
Start calling in victory. Start calling in divine health. Start calling in abundance. You can prophesize your future. If you want to know where you'll be five years from now listen to what you are saying. Our words will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.” “With our words we can predict our future. We can prophesize our future. – Joel Osteen, sermon 2004
The Fruit of Prosperity Teaching •It produces selfish Christians who are easily preoccupied with temporal blessing and who are dissatisfied with life •It frustrates the average believer because the basic tenets of this theology are unbiblical and only work for televangelists •It undermines true faith and produces guilty Christians who find themselves unable to live the life proclaimed by the teacher
Matthew 8:19-20 And a scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”
Hebrews 5:7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.
2 Timothy 4:20 Erastus remained at Corinth, and I left Trophimus, who was ill, at Miletus. This seemingly incidental comment is a devastating blow to the prosperity gospel. The great apostle Paul left a dear friend behind who was still sick. Why didn’t he heal him?
2 Corinthians 8:8-9a For we do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. 9b But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.
Job 42:5-6 I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”
This is God's universal purpose for all Christian suffering: more contentment in God and less satisfaction in the world. – John Piper
