  1. Harcourt 10-11 Theme 3 Whole Group Lesson 14 Day 2 (Day 3 & 4 Spend Time on Story)

  2. Whole Group Reading

  3. The BIG Question: What strategies do good readers use to help them understand a story?

  4. Comprehension Strategy: Predict Outcomes As you read, think about what has happened so far and about what might happen next. * Look for story clues about what events may happen next in the story or what actions a character may take next. * Think about what you already know from real life and what you know about the character or situation. * Use both the story clues and what you already know to make predictions about what might happen next in a story.

  5. Predict Outcomes

  6. 1. What do you predict Jada will do next? • She will get sick. • She will choose another seat. • She will become friends with Lyza. • She will decide to walk to school.

  7. 2. Which clue from the story supports your prediction? • F. Jada had always walked to school. • G. Jada doesn’t know where to sit. • H. Lyza liked Jada’s T-shirt. • I. Jada gets sick in cars and on buses.

  8. 3. How do you think Jada will feel the next day before getting on the bus? • playful • nervous • calm • jealous

  9. 4. Which clue from the story supports your prediction? • F. Jada kept her eyes on the floor of the bus. • G. Jada likes thinks to stay the same. • H. Jada likes things better when she’s familiar with them. • I. Jada wears cool T-shirts.

  10. CAUTION CAUTION CAUTION The movie in your mind stops. You can’t picture what’s happening. You can’t remember what you just read. Your mind starts to wander, and you lose track of what’s happening. You have no questions in your mind. You’re not wondering about anything. You aren’t able to make any connections. Nothing seems to be important.

  11. Fix-up Strategies

  12. Comprehension Strategy: Read Ahead As you read, you may become confused about something. If you read ahead in the text, the author often explains what is confusing. * Pause when you come to a word, phrase, or sentence you do not understand. * Try to identify exactly what is confusing to you. * Form a question about what you do not understand. * Read ahead to try and find the answer.

  13. Leigh sat alone on a rock by the lake. As she read her book, she heard a strange, low humming sound. The humming was coming from the lake! Then something appeared over the lake, slowly gaining size and changing. Leigh had never seen anything like the strange cloud that swirled just above the water. something = strange cloud

  14. Leigh dropped her book and started to back away from the water’s edge, her eyes fixed on the swirling cloud. Suddenly, as she stared at the “cloud,” Leigh smiled. She ran back toward the lake. The “cloud” was made of many small forms, flipping and splashing just above the water’s surface. “What a lucky thing for me,” Leigh thought. It wasn’t often that schools of hummerfish came to the surface of the lake. something = school of hummerfish
