  1. The ISM: stuff between the stars(Faint Gas around the Horsehead Nebula)

  2. Interstellar Medium Many “inter-media” : • Interplanetary – space between planets • Interstellar – space between stars • Intergalactic – space between galaxies This “space” is NOT a vacuum, although in some cases it isn’t far!

  3. Solar Motion thru the ISM

  4. ISM Components • ISM is very inhomogeneous, with multiple components

  5. Our Local Interstellar Medium

  6. Panning Out a Bit …

  7. Nebulae Clouds of gas and/or dust • Emission Neb. – reddish • HII regions • Planetary Nebulae (PNe) • SN Remnants • Reflection Neb. – bluish • Dark Neb. – blocks light from more distant stars

  8. Reflection and Emission Nebulae

  9. Another Example of Colors Absence of stars here implies what?

  10. Dark Nebula Saw this same image in relation to extinction issues

  11. DUST:Turns out that dust plays an important role in astronomy. It has strong extinction properties, represents complex chemistry, and is a source of infrared radiation. Here is an example of different dust types, in this case in the disk of a B supergiant star.

  12. Cold Gaseous Columns

  13. Star Formation “Nests”

  14. Stellar Recycling - Wind Ejecta

  15. Another Example: Mira (seen by GALEX)

  16. Wind-Blown Bubbles in the LMC

  17. Crab Nebula - A Supernova Remnant

  18. HII Region - The Rosette Nebula

  19. Planetary Nebula

  20. Planetary Nebulae are Solar Endpoints

  21. More Planetary Nebulae(HST)

  22. A Pretty One: The Boomerang

  23. Example of Faint Extended Structure
