  5. Voter Requirements • 18, citizen, registered to vote • Most states- registered 30 days before election • Prevents voter fraud

  6. Former voting limitations • Literacy test • Poll tax • Land owner • gender • race • age

  7. Functions of political parties • Nominate • inform voters • bonding agent • become less important. More people have become independent voters.

  8. Incumbent • person currently holding office and seeking re-election • Presidential incumbents almost always given re-nomination

  9. Minor Parties • Economic protest- short lived • Ideological- (communist party)- longest lived • Single issue- shortest lived- tries to get issue absorbed by major party • Splinter- breaks away from major party around one person- Bull Moose progressives
