Nancy Maynard. Tom Beland. Her Early Life. She was born in Harlem, to parents Alfred Hall and Eve Keller on November 1 st 1946. Her father was a jazz bassist and her mother was a nurse. She attended Long Island University and graduated with a journalism degree in 1966.

  2. Her Early Life • She was born in Harlem, to parents Alfred Hall and Eve Keller on November 1st 1946. • Her father was a jazz bassist and her mother was a nurse. • She attended Long Island University and graduated with a journalism degree in 1966. • She became interested in journalism when a fire destroyed her local school and she didn’t like how the media portrayed the disaster.

  3. Early Career • Maynard started her career as a copy-girl and reporter for the new York Post. • She was hired into The New York Times at the age of 21. • Was the first African-American woman to be a reporter for The New York Times.

  4. Post-Career • In 1983 Maynard and her husband purchased The Oakland Tribune • Her and her husband founded theMaynard Institute for Journalism Education in 1977. • She died on September 21st 2008 at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, California at the age of 61.

  5. Family • Besides her parents, her family consisted of 2 children and 2 husbands. • The first husband was Daniel D. Hicks, with whom she had her first child David. Daniel died in 1974. • Her second husband was Robert C. Maynard, who already had a daughter. But they had a child together, Alex. Robert died in 1993.

  6. Achievements • Nancy Maynard received The National Award For Black Journalists in 1998 and she was also the first African-American woman reporter to work for The New York Times as a full-time reporter. • She received a Lifetime Achievement Award In Journalism from Denver’s Five Points Media Center. • Some of her major stories included coverage of the developments in the 60’s urban rebellions, the developments nationally in science and health ranging from the NASA Apollo program to the costs and effectiveness of health care programs including Medicaid and Medicare.

  7. Books • She wrote three books Managing the Future of News and Information and Mega Media: How Market Forces Are Transforming News, and A Woman’s Right to Know- Health and Hormones After 35.

Associations • Served as board member for the Tribune Company, Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), and the New York Stock Exchange. • Served as the chair the Freedom Forum Media studies center at Columbia University. • “Because the job's very powerful, in ways that we don't understand. The connection of that personality to an audience is something that the networks take extremely seriously”
