SGP Blog • How did your experience of prayer or BCC help to create unity? • What reflections do you have on the content (readings, homily, discussions)?
Seed and roots in Scripture • In general, Peter is portrayed as the leader of the apostles • usually answers first and center of action • Examples: Walking on water, transfiguration, bread of life discourse, Last supper Photo: http://holyland-pilgrimages.com/mount-tabor/attachment/mount-tabor-and-the-church-of-transfiguration/
Seed and roots in Scripture • Matthew 16:13-19 - “You are Rock” • divine gift of leadership & keeper of revelation • magisterial primacy – guided by the Holy Spirit, has power to give the final definition of teaching and doctrine • Simon to Petros (Gr.) - “Rock” or Kephas (Aramaic) - “Rock” (Jn 1:42) • Using “Rock” as name extremely rare in ancient times
Seed and roots in Scripture • John 21:17 - “Feed my sheep” • shepherd of the flock • jurisdictional primacy - final decision in matters of conflict • Since Christ set up the Church as a visible, sacramental structure and not just a spiritual body (think incarnation), this organized, corporate society needs leadership.
Seed and roots in Scripture • Acts 15 - Council of Jerusalem - after Peter speaks, all fall silent (final authority) - concluding remarks by St. James, local bishop of Jerusalem • Galatians 1:18-19 - Paul goes to Jerusalem to speak to Peter • 1 Peter 5:1 - Peter addresses his “fellow elders” then teaches as one with authority“first among equals” • Gal. 2:11-14 - Peter is admonished by Paul for behavior- not a matter of doctrine & faith, but practice (Popes are human & fallible)
Early Church Development • Church was mainly underground and local (not well developed), need for visible head was less, but still apparent: • Clement I: called in to settle dispute in Corinth • St Irenaeus: Christians must be united with Church of Rome to be considered Apostolic
Early Church Development • Once Christianity became legal, the need for and understanding of a universal leader of theChurch developed. • Roman synod - 380 - primacy of Rome due to “double apostolicity” - Peter &Paul. • Ecumenical councils of Ephesus and Chalcedon agreed.
Articulation of Leo I • 5th century • Made important distinction between person and office • Leader is unworthy, but has authority to build Church because of the office held. • Office of the papacy has final say in matters of faith and morals. • Heir to Petrine (from Peter) cannot pronounce error in these matters.
