  2. Tiananmen Square Protests Sparked because of the death of General Hu Yaobang Purged for his political liberation Day before Hu Yaobang's funeral, over 100,000 students gathered in Tiananmen Square
  3. Protests Continued.. Lasted weeks after Hu's funeral Riots began in cities as Xi’an and Changsha Military took action on June 4th, of 1989 Violent forces were brought upon the protesters
  4. General Hu Yaobang November 20th, 1915 – April 15th, 1989 Leader of People's Republic of China who supported economic and political reforms. 1987, forced to resign for being neglectful, and was humiliated with self-criticism.
  5. Martial Law The Chinese government declared martial law Martial law is the imposition of military rule by military authorities over designated regions on an emergency basis
  6. Hunger Strike To avoid losing the momentum, more then one thousand protesters held a hunger strike. It gave them support and alarmed top Communist Party leadership
  7. Protest Spread Movement spread across to students and workers in over 400 cities People also traveled to the capital to join the protest in the Square.
  8. Chinese Response China’s response was to use military force against the innocent protesters 2,600 were killed, total is still unknown The Chinese government declared martial law
  9. Military Advance 27th and 38thArmies of the People’s Liberation Army were sent to take control Lead by Commander Yang Shangkun
  10. Protesters Fight Back Word spread through Beijing Protesters setup barricades at every major intersection Protesters threw rocks and Molotov cocktails at police and army vehicles
  11. Fight continued.. Soldiers responded by opening fire Innocent civilians from their apartment balconies were shot
  12. Aftermath Arrests and persecution of student leaders Small Protests went on for a few days from the survivors of the massacre in different cities
  13. Memorial Goddess of Democracy and Freedom. Built during the protests to show freedom throughout china.
