Zoot suit • Zoot suits were a trend among Mexican American youth in L.A
Conflicts • Most conflicts happened before the riots happened between white service men and the young Mexican-American community. • A number of military instillations were located near Mexican American communities. • All about the girls
Sleepy Lagoon • Tipping point for the Riots. • August 1942, Jose Diaz was murdered. • 600 Mexican American teenagers were rounded up • Any soot suiter near a military instillation was all that was needed to attack.
Riots • Riots began on June 3rd 1943 • White sailors claimed they were attacked • Infuriated by the attack, sailors looked for revenge
Aftermath • Nationwide condemnation of the actions of the military riots and civilian authorities. • Human Relation committee was formed to discuss issues. • "The question goes deeper than just [zoot] suits. It is a racial protest. I have been worried for a long time about the Mexican racial situation. It is a problem with roots going a long way back, and we do not always face these problems as we should“ –Eleanor Roosevelt • Gave the Mexican American community the drive to fight for more civil rights
