List characteristics of religious • Dedicates life to God’s service • Follows teachings and example of Christ • Makes public vows or promises • Joins in a common work • May be a priest, deacon, brother, or sister • Shares in mission of Christ and his Church • Belongs to a community
What is a “vow”? • A deliberate and free promise made to God by people who want especially to dedicate their lives to God. • What vows do religious usually make? • Poverty • Chastity • Obedience
Match each verse to one of the three vows • Matt. 8:20 • Matt. 19:21 • Mark 14: 35-36 • John 4:33-34 • 1 Cor. 7:32-34
How does living these vows help religious to serve others? • Chastity • Allows religious to love God with undivided hearts and to tend to the needs of all people • Poverty • Permits them to live simply and to share their talents. • Obedience • By being at God’s disposal and by obeying authority as to how and where to work, the members of a religious community combine their talents to serve God and others to the fullest
