What is energy again…? • Energy is the ability to do work • aka “CAUSE CHANGE” • Energy is measured in joules (J)
Kinetic VS Potential • Potential energy is stored energy • Kinetic energy is the energy of motion
Chemical Energy • Chemical energy is potential energy stored in chemical bonds.
Energy waiting to be released by a chemical reaction. • Chemical bonds hold atoms together. When chemical bonds are broken in a reaction, the stored energy is often released
Electrical Energy • Energy caused by movement of electrons. • Depending on whether the charges are moving or stored, it can be a form of kinetic or potential energy.
Mechanical Energy • Energy due to an object’s position or motion • combination of an object potential energy and its kinetic energy • Mechanical Energy = KE + PE
An object with mechanical energy can do work on another object. • The more mechanical energy an object has, the more work it can do.
Nuclear Energy • Nuclear energy is energy that is stored within the nucleus of atoms. • A fission reaction at a nuclear power plant provides enough energy to give electricity to large cities.
The fusion reaction in the sun provides our planet with all of the energy it needs for living organisms to survive.
Radiant Energy • Radiant energy refers to energy that travels by waves or particles. Light (electromagnetic waves) Sound
Thermal Energy • Thermal energy is the total kinetic and potential energy of the particles in an object. • HEAT ; energy due to the movement of particles within the object Greater thermal energy Add heat particles to move faster higher temperature
