Origine of the Name « France » • The name France comesfrom latin Francia whichliterallymeans « land of the Franks » or « Frankland ». • The Franks or Frankish people were a West Germanic tribal confederation first attested in the 3rd century as living north and east of the lower Rhine river .
History of France In anciant times France was part of the Celticterretoryknown as Gaul or Gallia. Since the 17th century France has played a major role in european and world events . France was a monarchyuntil 1792. The absolutemonarchycollapsed and the 1st constitution waswritten on 1791. France declared a republic on 22 september 1792.
French Revolution • It was a period of radical social and politicalupheaval in French and Europeanhistory . • It started on 1789 and ended on 1799. • The French Revolution was caused by the dire economic conditions in France, the spiralling cost of bread, and the frustration of the French middle class in not having any voice in parliament.
Under the Kings Louis XV and Louis XVI, France had been supporting the American Revolution and been part of the Seven Years War. • This had made the country very poor with a huge national dept. • King Louis XVI was an indecisive ruler and his wife Marie Antoinette was Austrian so the French people wanted them gone.
The first major event of the Revolution was the storming of the Bastille on july 14 1789.
In October 1789 the women of Paris marched to Versailles (where the royal family lived, some miles outside Paris) to protest at the shortage of bread.
The National Assembly began to make lots of changes. • On 26 August, the National Assembly published the Dleclaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen , which was written by the nobleman, Marquis LaFayette. • Under the new government, the RomanCatholic Church would have much less power than they had before. In 1790, all special taxes and powers of the Church were cancelled. All the Church’s property was taken over by the state.
The Estates General was transformed into the National Assembly, which met in August 1789 The third Estate gained a real voice in parliament for the first time.
The purpose of the French Revolution was to overthrow a cruel regime. The ancian regime was oppressing the people and many of them had had enough. They overthrew the government and wanted to establish a democracy .
