Question • Did France establish a successful economy in New France?
Origin : Company of 100 associates • They were 100 french investors to colonize new france • Maintained the clergy and paid soldiers for defense against the Iroquois • Each member contributed $9000 • This started New France's economy • New France got people into New France by having cheap land
Support • France provided New france with supplies to trade in the fur trade, via the Atlantic crossing • Port Royal post was abandoned (French government created new trading post for fishing industry) • Champlain decided on Quebec because it was advantageous (lots of untouched land) this is where they made the habitants of Quebec trading post
Mercantilism • Created by Colbert to improve France’s economy • Colonies like New France gather raw materials and send them to France (mother country) then France manufactures goods and sends products back to the colonies • In 1701, no furs were collected but France was forced to still pay the colony to keep it running • Therefore they couldn’t be very independent or improve their economy, but New France kept stability because of France
The Seigneurial system • land was divided into strips • changed culture because people lived close to their neighbours • it was dependent on the Habitants which farmed and kept the land and the seigneur who owned the land and built the mill and roads • Habitants only produced enough food to live off of and rarely enough extra to sell • the system stifled the economy because there was no production or innovation
Conclusion • The company of 100 associates started the economy strongly • The fur trade supported the economy greatly • Mercantilism kept stability but didn’t allow any independence or improvement • The Seigneurial system stifled the economy because there was no production or innovation • Successful but no improvement
