  5. The incubation period • Should be isolated from other susceptible individuals for the first five days.

  6. How it can be prevented • Washing your hands appropriately and often with soap and running water. • Not sharing eating utensils. • Surfaces that are touched often, such as toys, doorknobs, tables, and countertops, should be cleaned regularly with soap and water, or with antibacterial wipes.

  7. Contagious or not • Mumps is highly contagious and has a rapid spread among members living in close quarters. • Mainly from sheets, pillows, clothing • Hand-to-mouth contact after touching such items.

  8. Vaccine? What kind? How often does it need to be used? • Children should receive the first dose of mumps-containing vaccine at 12-15 months and the second dose at 4-6 years. Two types of vaccine • MMR vaccine is given to prevent measles, mumps, and rubella. • The MMRV vaccine is given to prevent measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (more commonly called chickenpox).

  9. How it can be treated • No specific treatment for mumps. Ice or heat packs applied to the neck area and Tylenol may help relieve pain. • Extra fluids • Soft foods • Warm salt water gargles

  10. Interesting facts • The name "mumps" comes from an old word for "lump" or an old word for "mumble."
