The Lymphatic System By Thomas Grady, Taylor Neal, and Ashley Bacon
Structure of the Lymphatic System • Consists of two parts-Lymphatic Vessels, or Lymphatics- Various Lymphoid tissues and organs, such as Tonsils, or Peyer’s Patches
Lymphatic Vessels Structure • Effective drainage system which collects excessive interstitial fluid via excessively permeable Lymphatic Capillaries located in loose connective tissues which surround blood capillaries • This excess fluid is Lymph, and returns to the heart via veins located at the base of the neck
Lymphatic Vessels Transport • Lymph is transported from the Lymphatic Capillaries through the larger Lymphatic Collecting Vessels • Lymphatics, or Lymphatic Vessels, be they capillaries or collecting vessels, are pumpless. These vessels are powered by skeletal muscle movement(physical activity), thoracic pressure changes associated with breathing, and through the slight peristalsis of the Lymphaticsthemselves
Lymphatic Vessels Transport • Lymph is finally returned to the venous system through the Right Lymphatic and Thoracic Ducts • The Right Lymphatic Duct drains Lymph from the right arm and the right side of the head and thorax • The Thoracic Duct collects Lymph from the rest of the body
Lymphoid Tissue and Organs Lymph Nodes • Lymph nodes are kidney shaped sacs under an inch in diameter filled with Lymphocytes • ‘Buried’ by a fibrous connective tissue • Cluster along Lymphatic Vessels • Protect body by filtering Lymph, which carries foreign material expelled by other body tissue, such as bacteria or excess plasma
Lymphoid Tissue and Organs Lymph Nodes • Lymph is cleansed by the Follicles, collections of lymphocytes found in the cortex of the Lymph Node, and phagocytes located in the Medulla
Lymphoid Tissue and Organs Lymph Nodes • Lymph is a one way system, flowing from Afferent Lymphatic Vessels, to Efferent Lymphatic Vessels • To ensure Lymph is filtered proficiently, there is a larger number of afferent vessels as opposed to efferent. • Because of this, Lymph moves slowly through the Lymphatics.
Lymphoid Tissue and Organs Spleen • The Spleen is a soft, blood rich organ located on the left side of the abdominal cavity • Filters and cleanses bloodof bacteia and viruses, and destroys worn-out blood cells. • Promotes lymphocyte proliferation and stores platelets
Lymphoid Tissue and Organs Thymus Gland • Lymphoid mass found deep in the throat laying over the heart. • Produces hormones which program lymphocytes
Lymphoid Tissue and Organs Tonsils • Tonsils are small masses of lymphoid tissue that ring the pharynx • Trap and remove bacteria entering the throat, often becoming engorged and painfully swollen in a condition called tonsollitus
Lymphoid Tissue and Organs Peyer’s Patches • Essentially these are Tonsils found in the small intestine wall. • Perform massive duty of filtering small intestines, which have large numbers of bacteria on a constant basis
