Lymphatic System Function (: 1. The function of the Lymphatic System plays a ‘big part in the immune system’. The System is like a defense mechanism, it attempts to fight off cancer and infections. • The Lymphatic System is made up of vessels, that are connected to your lymph nodes. Your lymph node is made up of lymphocytes and white blood cells that destroy and get rid of bacteria and viruses. • Another function this system has is it absorbs fat and protein through your intestines and it allows you to have the movement of your muscles. • The major function of the lymphatic system is to collect extra lymph fluid from the body tissues and return it to the blood.
Lymph Nodes! The best way to describe a lymph node is they are small, bean-shaped organs. They have small strands of material that remove bacteria and bad viruses from the lymph. The lymph is the liquid matter in the lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are widely distributed through the body. They work to get rid of foreign particles and/or bacteria.
Thymus The thymus gland makes lymphocytes. The thymus gland is located under the breast bone. It is a pinkish-grey colored gland. The thymus gland is also known as T-lymphocyte. It wasn’t until recently that scientists became more aware that young adults were dying because they had very large thymus glands, a.k.a. T-lymphocyte.
Spleen (: The spleen is an organ that filters blood and as the thymus, also produces lymphocytes. The lymphocytes in the spleen are used for the deconstruction of old red blood cells. It also stores and holds blood. The spleen is shaped like a fist and is located under the left side of the diaphragm.
Tonsils <3 Tonsils are made up of lymphoid tissue, which is found on the base of the tongue. Lymphoid tissue is made up of lymphocytes. Some doctors choose to have their patient’s tonsils removed because they are too large, you get sore throats from them, and some even have tumors. In any of these cases, you go through a surgery to have them removed.
Lymph! The lymph a clear, watery, sometimes yellow fluid that contains white blood cells and moves throughout the lymphatic system. The lymph removes bacteria and certain proteins, transport fat, and supply healthy lymphocytes to the blood.
Diseases (: The two most common diseases you can get from the Lymphatic System would be: • Lymph edema • Cancer
Lymph edema The lymphatic system collect surplus fluid throughout the body. Edema, a.k.a. swelling, can sometimes take place when there is too much fluid build-up or a blockage.
Lymphoma (Cancer) Lymphoma is a cancer involving lymphocytes. Whenever you get lymphoma, what happens is that lymph carry white blood cells, and they attack your body. This disease results in swelling in the mouth, eyes, etc. and can result in death.
Relationship (: • Digestive System - absorbs fats & protein! • Muscular System- Allows your muscles to move & be active!! • Cardiovascular- It collects extra lymph fluid from body tissues & returns it to the blood. • Gastrointestinal- Lymphatic tissue is in & around the GI tract. • Skeletal- Bone Marrow contains lymphatic tissue. • Reproductive- Most of lymph cells are found in clusters; neck, armpit & groin area.
