History of UEFA Europa League • The UEFA Europa League was set up in 1971 as UEFA. • The UEFA Cup was preceded by the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, which was a European football competition played between 1955 and 1971. • The competition was traditionally open to the runners-up of domestic leagues, but the competition was merged with UEFA's previous second-tier European competition, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, in 1999
. • It is the second most prestigious European club football contest after the UEFA Champions League. • In 1999, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup was abolished and merged with the UEFA Cup. • The title has been won by 26 different clubs, 11 of which have won the title more than once. The most successful clubs in the competition are Juventus, Internazionale and Liverpool with three titles apiece
Prize Money • A group stage participation in the Europa League nets €640,000, with a €60,000 bonus per group match played. A victory in the group pays €140,000 and a draw €70,000. Reaching the knock-out matches triggers additional bonuses: €200,000 for the round of 32, €300,000 for the round of 16, €400,000 for the quarterfinals and €700,000 for the semifinals. The losing finalists receive €2 million and the champions get €3 million. In comparison, any team that reaches the UEFA Champions League group stage will be paid €3.9 million.
