What is Social Media? “Social media refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks.”
What is impact? “The effect or impression of one thing on another” • Awareness • Treatment Adherence • Trial Accrual • Lobbying
Trial Adherence Private OR Public pages could me made. Each could provide: • - A form of support group. Relationships with other people on the same trial may provide encouragement • Researchers easily feedback updates to participants, and engage with them if they wish • Factual reminders could be post- e.g. remember this drug must be took X times a day • Similar to internet forums already available, but Facebook is more easily accessible • Could be used to look at the patient journey in more detail, and pick up information that otherwise wouldn’t be available I’m part of a ‘TYA InTouch Birmingham’ page where updates are posted and can provide psychosocial benefits.
Trial Accrual Pages or individuals could put statuses out, e.g. “Do you know someone who has ‘insert criteria here’? If so get them to email example@co.uk or message this page direct.” -Information exchange
Lobbying (…Individually!!) E.g. Petitions and signatures.
Public CLG Facebook page • Educational updates. Raise awareness. Information about clinical trials. • Post updates from meetings • Stimulate Discussions • Updates from individual members, writing about a piece of work they are involved in • Updates from individual members about why they are involved with the CLG • Send various messages out. Cancer touches a lot of people, so engagement could be very high. Potential for posts to go ‘viral’.
Private CLG Facebook Page • ‘Secret’ setting. Only members can be part of it by invite, meaning every member would need a facebook account (takes a couple of minutes to make) • ‘Open’ setting. Anyone can see it, only members with accounts can like, comment, post, etc. • Members can post photos, links, updates and start discussions about whatever they like. Most popular posts are ‘pushed’ towards the top of the page. • Posts can be ‘pinned’ (so it stays at the top) to encourage discussion about particular topics. This can be controlled by admins who can choose a particular topic that is important or necessary. • Others can then comment on posts • A group page could then link up to a list of events page:e.g. A page for this meetingor A page for an upcoming conferenceor a page discussing a specific study • Or a page supporting a particular campaignEach events page could be SPECIFIC and encourage discussion and actions leading up to the event
