Dominant Dominant alleles are always represented with a uppercase letter. A B C D E F G H I
Recessive Recessive alleles are always represented by a lowercase letter. a b c d e f g h i
Homozygous An organism is homozygous if the two alleles are the same type. They can be homozygous dominant or recessive. AA aa BB bb CC cc DD dd
Heterozygous If the two alleles differ the organism is heterozygous and the dominant trait appears. Aa Bb Cc Dd Ee Ff Gg
If both alleles were dominant, that trait will be observed. If both alleles are recessive, that trait will be observed. If one dominant and one recessive allele are present, the dominant trait was observed. TT=Dominant trait seen tt=Recessive trait seen Tt=Dominant trait seen
TT= homozygous dominant tt= homozygous recessive Tt= heterozygous
Phenotype Phenotype is the physical appearance of the alleles. Ex. Is an animal being a certain color or having a certain trait.
Genotype Genotype is the actual genes that an organism has. Ex. TT Tt tt
Examples If a dog is homozygous dominant for a strait tail. What will be the alleles if the letter that represents tail straightness is S?
Examples If a plants is tall with heterozygous alleles for height (T), what are the allele?
Examples If a plant is tall what is the possible genotypes. Tall is dominant to short. (use “t” for alleles)
Examples If a brown mouse (Bb) is mated with a white mouse (bb), what will be the chance of producing white mice?
Examples In beagles the trait for droopy (D) ears is dominant to perky (d) ears. What would be expected offspring if two heterozygous droopy eared dogs were mated?
Incomplete dominance Traits that show incomplete dominance are traits that blend. When white snapdragons are crossed with red snapdragons all of the resulting offspring are pink.
Codominant Codominant traits are traits that are both expressed in the offspring. WW RR RW
