  2. James Brindley • Born: 1716, Turnstead, England • Died: Sept. 27, 1772 • Civil Engineer • First modern English canal engineer • Designed and engineered the canal network necessary for industrialization of the midlands.

  3. Early Life • Grew up in area populated by small tenant farmers • Barely literate throughout life • Worked as a laborer and showed interest in machinery • Was an apprentice to a millwright for 7 years.

  4. Successes • Began survey for Duke’s Canal in 1759 • In 1760 work began immediately on the canal • Constructed first canal aqueduct with stone span of 3 arches.

  5. John Fitch • Born: Jan. 21, 1743; Windsor, Connecticut • Died: July 2, 1798 • One of the first to produce serviceable steamboat

  6. Early Life • Taken out of school at age 8 to do field chores • Taught himself elementary arithmetic and geography • Ran off to Rocky Hill, Connecticut to become a sailor, returned shortly • Became apprentice to two watchmakers • Eventually started to journey up and down east coast, until he stopped in Bucks County, PA around 1775

  7. Successes • 1785 built model of steamboat to present to the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia • George Washington and Ben Franklin both backed his model • Took 3 tries to build a working model • In 1788 built working model that ran in record time.

  9. Inventions (1730-1780) • 1752- Benjamin Franklin invents lightening conductor • 1769- James Watt patents steam engine • 1799- Louis Robert invents paper machine

  10. Inventions (1760- 1789) • 1793- Cotton gin invented in America by Eli Whitney • 1796- Physician Edward Jenner creates vaccination for smallpox in England
