Roman Technology • The Roman Empire had one of the most advanced set of technologies of its time • Several Roman technological like civil engineering, construction materials, transport technology, and some inventions such as the mechanical reaper. • The Romans achieved high levels of technology in some part because they borrowed from and absorbed the culture of the people of the Mediterranean basin.
More technology • Romans used water power, and watermills. • They were used for corn milling, sawing timber and crushing ore. They exploited wood and coal for heating. • The Romans made great use of aqueducts, dams, bridges, and amphitheatres. They were also responsible for many innovations to roads, sanitation, and construction in general.
Continuing Roman Technology • Roman roads and Roman bridges such as the one Julius Caesar built in record time over the river “Rhine” are fine examples of roman technology. • Animals such as ox and donkey, wood energy, wind and hydro (water) power were other great Roman technologies.
Roman Inventions • The ancient Romans adopted every good idea that they saw. They copied anything if they thought it was good. A perfect example of this would be the myths or the Greek gods. The Romans were great believers in healthy living. They made sure that all the people of Rome were able to get medical help. Believed that all Romans should have food and shelter so they invented welfare programs for the poor.
Continuing Inventions • The Catholic faith, which kept going on after the fall of the Western Roman Empire More inventions including the use of rings to denote friendship, engagements, and weddings, and the use greenery to decorate during winter holidays, and other holiday customs. • Romans invented socks, shoes, and even different types of hats.
Even more inventions • They also had many fun inventions that were games such as many board games and ball games including knuckleball (jacks) and hoops.
Small list of fun facts • In ancient Rome, if they saw something they liked or that was better than their inventions, they would copy it so it would be just as good • Catholic religion came from ancient Rome • Romans also used cranes to lift heavy things such as rocks or boulders. Just like we use in the present day. • Roman aqueducts systems had a capacity to supply the city 300 million gallons of water everyday.
Questions • What did the romans use to get water? • What did Romans do if they saw a good invention?
