Current status of national-scale soil geochemistry • Only two data sets of national scale (1 by USGS and 1 by USDA)
USGS national-scale soil data (Shacklette data) • 1,323 samples (1 per 6,000 km2 ) on 50 mile centers • 40+ elements analyzed • Collected from 1960s to late 1970s • Still the most-often-quoted data set for “background” values of trace elements in soil • Similar data set for AK (Gough et al.)
USDA national-scale data (Holmgren et al., 1993, J. Environ. Qual.) • 3,045 samples collected from agricultural fields in major crop producing areas • Only analyzed for Cd, Pb, Zn,Cu, Ni • Collected from 1978 to ~1990

USGS and NRCS studying the feasibility of a new national-scale soil geochemical survey of the US via Geochemical Landscapes Project. • Oct. 31- Nov. 1, 2002. Outcomes from workshop • Publication of proceedings outlining considerations and recommendations(?) for sample design, sampling protocols, and analytical protocols. • Identification of one or more pilot studies to evaluate these protocols and test the feasibility of adding determination of “bioavailability”, organic compounds, and microbial characterization. • Vocal constituency.
