Molecular – 2 non-metals Use Prefixes Don’t change 1st element ending Second element changes to –ide Ionic – metal and non-metal • NEVER use Prefix From formula to name • Name metal normally • Change ending of anion to –ide • -ate or –ite ending must check polyatomic list
Naming Notes Cont. Transition metals • d and p block metals have to be differentiated by using roman numerals to tell charge • Exceptions magic stair case DO NOT use Roman numerals Al, Zn , Ag 3 2 1 Cd +2 Ga +3

Naming Acids Count elements as with all naming Binary Acid – 2 elements (H + one other) hydro + root + ic Ex. HCl hydrochloric 3 or more elements = polyatomic ion – check yellow packet Simply name polyatomic and change ending ate – ic ite – ous Ex. HClO3 – chlorate becomes chloric acid
