Ionic Compounds • Ionic compounds involve the transfer of electons • Ex) K + Cl K+ ( Cl )- • Because it creates filled energy levels, the stability of the structure is similar to noble gases.
Properties and model of ionic compounds • solid at SATP (23o C) so must be strongly bonded together • High melting and boiling points • Good conductors of electricity when in solution form. • Ions are arranged to be surrounded by opposite charges. The arrangement of the ions is called a crystal lattice. • This arrangement explains why they are brittle, once the order of the ions is changed the crystal lattice will fall apart
Metallic crystals • Range from soft to very hard • Ductile, malleable, lustrous • Conducts electricity • Very compact crystalline structure ( some exceptions) • Valance electrons pass around from one ion to the next, ”gluing” the atoms together
Molecular crystals • Low melting points • Non-conductors of electricity • Soft
Covalent network crystals • Among the hardest materials on Earth ex) diamonds • Very hard, brittle, insoluable, nonconductors of electricity, high melting points • Like ionic bonds, have a continuous bonding holding the crystal together • Usually involve carbon or silicon
Carbon • Carbon is a very exceptional element as it can bond to itself to form many different pure carbon substances. See page 127 for carbon models
