Igniter 10/31: • Open textbook to page 454 and preview Chapter 14. • Remember what to look for: • Introduction Paragraph • Read captions • Look at Pictures • Look at Diagrams • Read Headings • Read Sub-headings • Scan Bold words • Guide for reading Questions • Checkpoint questions/End of Sect review questions
Not that kind of wave! Waves
What are waves? • A wave is a disturbance that transfers energy from place to place • What is the cause of waves? • When a source of energy causes a medium to vibrate • What is a medium? • Material through which a wave travels i.e. water • Can be solid, liquid or gas
Cause • When a source of energy causes a medium to vibrate. • Vibration is a back-and-forth or up-and-down motion • The motion is the source of the wave • Moving objects have energy object can transfer energy to a medium creating a wave
What carries waves? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yPTa8qi5X8&feature=player_embedded • Most waves require something to travel through i.e. air or water • If waves require a medium to travel through they are called mechanical waves
Wave Types • Transverse Waves: • Move the medium at right angles in the direction in which the waves are travelling • Longitudinal Waves: • Moves particles of the medium parallel the direction that the waves are traveling • Combination of Waves: • Both transverse and longitudinal • Surface waves http://www.kettering.edu/physics/drussell/Demos/waves/wavemotion.html
Transverse waves • Wave moves in one direction • Particles of the medium move across the direction of the wave • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHcse1jJAto&feature=player_embedded
Transverse Waves Cont. • Parts of a wave: Terms: crest, trough, wavelength, and amplitude http://www.kirksville.k12.mo.us/khs/Teacher_Web/alternative/waves.html
Longitudinal Waves • Move the particles of a medium parallel to the direction the waves are travelling • Terms: Compression and rarefaction http://www.kirksville.k12.mo.us/khs/Teacher_Web/alternative/waves.html
Combination of Waves • Combination of transverse and longitudinal waves • Occur at the surface between two mediums example: water and air
