  2. Background • Research on large carnivore in Scandinavia: • Extensive cooperation on biological and ecological aspects. • E.g. Skandulv (the Scandinavian Wolf Project since 2000) • Cooperation on social aspects are very limited. • The Norwegian Environmental Agency: • Wanted to know more about how opinions on large carnivores vary between Norway and Sweden.

Some more background • Norway and Sweden are neighboring countries • Share a long border • and a common wolf population. • Winter 2013/14: The joint Scandinavian population counted roughly 400 individuals. • Approx. 320 wolves were Swedish only • Approx. 30 were Norwegian • Approx. 50 wolves were resident across the border • Steep increase from 4 or 5 only a few decades ago. • Conflicts prevail

Research questions • To what extent are opinions on wolves different in Norway and Sweden? • Are people who live in large carnivore areas more prone to anti wolf opinions than the average population, and are Norway and Sweden different in that respect? • Are opinions on wolfs associated with the same social and cultural drivers in the two countries?

Data: • Data collection in Norway was carried out during two weeks in mid fall 2010 – TNS Gallup panel • Internet based survey / Response rate 49.7 percent • The Swedish data were collected in spring 2009 • Postal survey / Response rate 47 percent • Data have quite different features • Comparison is based on respondents answering identical questions and on the assumption that all four samples are representative of their respective universe.

Opinions on wolves: A prediction model • Block 1: Gender (Sex), Age, Education level • Block 2: ”believe wolves to be present near place of residence ” and ”fear of meeting wolfs in nature” • Block 3: Place of residence (size), Size of place where one grew up, Size of place where father grew up and Size of place where mother grew up • Block 4: Interested in spending time in nature, Importance of wild animals near residence, Attitude towards hunting, Hunted during last five years and Assessment of protected area size
