A Cognitive Role Is a set of learned behaviors that guides your behavior when fulfilling a social role A cognitive role is like the policies you have for your business organization . As we develop from being an infant and until we reach the end of our lives, we learn to play different roles, from being a child of a family unit, a school kid, being a teenager, being a date, being a hamburger flipper (employee), being a husband/wife, being an employee or professional, being a supervisor, a manager, a leader, an entrepreneur, being a retiree, and many others throughout life.
Why Is It Important to Understand the Concept of Cognitive Roles? Because, of the fact that you have to learn how to carry out the duties and responsibilities of each cognitive role that you engage in to achieve your goals. The key is to learn how to engage the role in the right way. So ask yourself—How did I learn to be a business person, leader, manager, supervisor, entrepreneur?
Within Each Cognitive Role There is a Set of Sub-Roles Sub-roles are sub-routines within the cognitive role that instruct you in specific behaviors to achieve one aspect of the purpose of the cognitive role Each of the cognitive roles we are focusing on, Business Person, Leader, Manager, Supervisor, and Entrepreneur have their respective set of Sub-Roles.
SOP’s Whether or not they are written your business has “standard operating procedures” (SOP’s). Think of sub-roles as SOP’s that you have learned and crafted that you believe will enable you to effectively fulfill the duties and responsibilities of a cognitive role, thus achieving your goals for that cognitive role.

Why Are Cognitive Roles Useful? We have cognitive roles so that we do not have to relearn how to complete our social roles every time. But just because we have them does not make them “right”, sometimes they are in need of updating and changing.
