Statements • Starter – In pairs, note down whether the following statements are true or false and dicuss why.
1 • London is the capital city of the UK
2 • This chair is blue
3 • Martin Luther King was a good person
4 • Martin Luther King did good things
5 • Tuscany is a beautiful place
Answers • Which are true and which are false and why? • Is there a difference between any of these statements? Which ones are facts and opinions? How do we know?
Truth • There are two philosophical ways to define truth. • 1 – Correspondence theory of truth – Something is true insofar as it corresponds/relates to something that actually exists outside of your view. ‘I am a teacher’ corresponds to somethins that is actually true. • 2 – Coherence theory of truth – Something is true insofar as it is consistent with the view you hold. ‘I am a teacher’ is true in the sense that it consistently adheres to what I say
Correspondence Truth • ‘The chair is blue’. • IF you think that this is correspondingly true, move to one side and to the other if you do not think it is.
Cognitive vs Non-Cognitive • Group 1 – Use p200-201 to take notes on cognitivism. These notes must include key terms cognitive, realist and empirical. You should understand them. • Group 2 – Notes on non-cognitive/anti-realist. Must also include rejection of propositions
