Identify the task you are being asked to perform by restating the prompt in your own words.
Underline key parts of the task, focusing on words like “explain,” “evaluate,” “analyze,” “compare and contrast,” or “to what extent.”
Brainstorm and write down all main events, people, concepts, and other relevant information to this time period. Use the acronym PERSIA to guide you – political, economic, religious, social, intellectual, artistic. Remember, this outside information is more important than the documents. The documents will complement this information.
Create a working thesis statement based on this information that addresses all parts of the prompt.
Read the documents. Note the source, title, and date first. Make margin notes that summarize the main point(s) of the document. Do not underline. Time of the essence and you need to be able to look quickly for the information you need, which will be in the margins.
Write the document letters that match your previously brainstormed information next to that information. You do not have to use all the documents.
Outline your essay, with the thesis at the top. Each point on your outline will become a body paragraph.
Write the essay, using an introduction with your thesis as the last sentence of it, your body paragraphs, and a solid conclusion that ties it all together. When referring to the documents, do so by title or source, not by “Document A says….” etc.
