  2. Norm That Was Broken • Norm: At Glenbard North, all students walk up the right side of the staircase and down the left. • How The Norm Was Broken: For one day, I walked on the wrong side of the stairs.

Reactions To The Violation • Expected Reactions: Yelling at me and telling me that I am on the wrong side of the stairs. • Actual Reactions: Staring at me, giving me a mean look, and ignoring that I am there. • Why These Reactions: People did not want to confront me so they gave me informal sanctions that took the least amount of effort possible.

  4. Feelings About The Violation • I felt awkward, misplaced, and rebellious because I was doing the opposite of what everyone else was doing. I was going against what the large majority of the people at school were doing.

  5. What I Learned • Norms control the behaviors of societies because people conform to what the majority is doing. • It is challenging to break norms because people might feel uncomfortable or embarrassed to break away from the pack.
